For this challenge, the Grade 5 students conducted some research on different types of towers all over the world. They investigated different structures, how they are built, and the ways in which towers can serve many different purposes. After completing the research component, the students had to follow specific guidelines to build their own towers using only straws and masking tape. The students used the "Engineering Design Process" to plan, design, build, test, and improve their structures. This was an excellent example of how students work collaborative and creatively to solve all kinds of challenging problems.
For this challenge, the Grade 4 students had to apply their understanding of the Engineering Design Process. They had to work collaboratively to create a stand using 100 index cards. The stand had to be at least 12 inches high and it had to hold a small panda bear on top without falling over. The students were assessed based on their ability to follow all of the directions, build a stable stand, and work collaboratively with their classmates.
