During the year, the students will be working on many higher-level problem-solving activities. In all three grade levels, my job is to both support and push students beyond the curriculum and standards being covered in the regular classroom. Each week, I will visit each classroom, and my hope is to inspire and engage every student in a variety of challenges and activities that will help to exercise their brains.
In addition, I will be working outside the classroom with small groups of students in the subjects of Math and reading/ELA. These groups of students will be selected through a multi-step process, and my task will be to provide an environment where those students with some common academic strengths can be pushed to apply their skills in new and exciting ways.
It has been a wonderful first term of learning in our Enrichment classes. The students have been learning how to approach various challenges as young engineers. They have learned how to collaborate and work together to solve a variety of problems across all subject areas. They are learning how to use both logical and creative thinking in every area of their lives. This first term has been a challenging and engaging expereince for all students!
Creativity Unit/Activity With Grade 3
This activity was all about creativity. We brainstormed what the word "creativity" means and then we completed these drawings where every student began with the same symbol.
Introduction to the Engineering Design Process With Grade 4
This acivity was an introduction to the engineering design process, where students worked through the FIVE stages of this process. For this first challenge, students worked in groups to build a stand using exactly 100 3x5 index cards and clear tape. They learned how to persevere and that it is always important to work well with their peers.
Tower of Power Activity With Grade 5
This activity was based on the enginnering design process that the students learned in Grade 4. For this challenge, the students had to work in groups to build a sturdy tower using 30 straws and 24 inches of masking tape. They had to think about how to make their structure both strong and creative at the same time.
