During the year, the students will be working on many higher-level problem-solving activities. In all three grade levels, my job is to both support and push students beyond the curriculum and standards being covered in the regular classroom. Each week, I will visit each classroom, and my hope is to inspire and engage every student in a variety of challenges and activities that will help to exercise their brains.
In addition, I will be working outside the classroom with small groups of students in the subjects of Math and reading/ELA. These groups of students will be selected through a multi-step process, and my task will be to provide an environment where those students with some common academic strengths can be pushed to apply their skills in new and exciting ways.
For this activity, the Grade 3 students became the teachers of a classroom with 20 students. They had to order supplies and keep track of their spending, and they had a budget of $25,000. The students also had to design a blueprint for their perfect classroom. This activity involved many skills around mathematics, collaboration, organization, and creative thinking. The students were all very engaged from start to finish!
