Mr. A's Enrichment/GT Blog

During the year, the students will be working on many higher-level problem-solving activities. In all three grade levels, my job is to both support and push students beyond the curriculum and standards being covered in the regular classroom. Each week, I will visit each classroom, and my hope is to inspire and engage every student in a variety of challenges and activities that will help to exercise their brains.

In addition, I will be working outside the classroom with small groups of students in the subjects of Math and reading/ELA. These groups of students will be selected through a multi-step process, and my task will be to provide an environment where those students with some common academic strengths can be pushed to apply their skills in new and exciting ways.

For this challenge, the Grade 4 students had to apply their understanding of the Engineering Design Process. They had to work collaboratively to create a stand using 100 index cards. The stand had to be at least 12 inches high and it had to hold a small panda bear on top without falling over. The students were assessed based on their ability to follow all of the directions, build a stable stand, and work collaboratively with their classmates.
