During the year, the students will be working on many higher-level problem-solving activities. In all three grade levels, my job is to both support and push students beyond the curriculum and standards being covered in the regular classroom. Each week, I will visit each classroom, and my hope is to inspire and engage every student in a variety of challenges and activities that will help to exercise their brains.
In addition, I will be working outside the classroom with small groups of students in the subjects of Math and reading/ELA. These groups of students will be selected through a multi-step process, and my task will be to provide an environment where those students with some common academic strengths can be pushed to apply their skills in new and exciting ways.
This annual activity and competition allows students the opportunity to become experts on a specific state in the United States. The students conduct focused research using the internet and library resources. They must then record a series of facts to present to the class as real-estate agents. Their ultimate goal is to convince Mr. A to move to their state by proviiding the kinds of facts that will best fit the needs of me and my family. This activity requires them to learn and apply research and note-taking skills as well as oral speaking and presentation skills. We are currently entering the championship round of this competition, for which there is a prize at the very end!
